“On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country...”
Those powerful words have guided the lives of millions of Scouts throughout this nation over the Boy Scouts of America’s 101-year history. Scouting’s legacy grows in impact and intensity with each passing year. There is no place in the country where Scouting’s heartbeat throbs stronger than here in the greater Cleveland community.
Scouting continues to thrive in the 21st century throughout northeastern Ohio – 2011 was another year of strong impact by the Greater Cleveland Council. Traditional Scouting membership grew by a whopping 7.5%, placing the Greater Cleveland Council among the top growth councils in the country. A significant portion of that growth occurred in some of the greater Cleveland area’s most challenging neighborhoods.
The community continues to embrace and support Scouting values and 2011 was a record year for direct funding support. The result was a healthy surplus of income over expenses. The greater Cleveland area recognizes Scouting as a worthwhile investment in our future. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the year was the attainment of the Eagle Scout rank by 120 young men. Literally, tens of thousands of hours of service were performed by these bright young leaders on their journey to Scouting’s highest award. Service to others is a core value of Scouting. In total, some 60,000 hours of service were performed in our community throughout the year. Scouting is indeed
strong and vibrant in northeast Ohio!
