Lance B. Wickman has been affiliated with Scouting for more than 60 years. He
has spent much of that time strengthening the Boy Scouts of America’s historic
ties with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
As a youth, Mr. Wickman participated in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting,
and Exploring, eventually earning the Eagle Scout Award. As an adult, he has served
as a Scoutmaster, an Explorer Advisor, and a Varsity Scout leader. In the Desert Pacific
Council, he worked as a commissioner and later council president. He is a recipient of
the Silver Beaver Award.
Since 1994, Mr. Wickman has been a general authority and a member of the
Quorum of the Seventy of the Mormon Church. During that time, he has also served as
the Church’s general counsel. He has participated actively with the BSA and with leaders
of other faith groups in defending fundamental rights of free speech, free association,
and religious liberty.
Mr. Wickman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of
California–Berkeley, and a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford University. Prior to his
call to become a general authority of the Mormon Church, he practiced law as a partner
in the international law firm of Latham & Watkins.
As a U.S. Army Ranger, Mr. Wickman rose to the rank of captain. He served
twice in Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Valorous Unit Citation,
and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Mr. Wickman and his wife, Patricia, are the parents of five children, one of
whom is deceased. They have four grandchildren.
